1. Identify Your Target Market Before starting a remote job search, have a good understanding of the remote work industry and any target markets. This means candidates should think about who they want to work for, and which companies or clients theyre most interested in. By narrowing the focus, it will be easier to make an application stand out.

2. Know Where to Look for Remote Jobs To find a legitimate, remote job, focus on using job boards that cater to this type of work. Additionally, word of mouth and networking can help job seekers uncover remote jobs that arent available to the general public yet, and sometimes even lead to a position being created for an applicant.

3. Highlight In-Demand Remote Skills Working remotely is not the same as working in an office. Recruiters want to see how job seekers display skills like excellent communication that can replace frequent face-to-face conversations, how theyre a self-starter, and how they can manage time efficiently.

Be sure to highlight coveted remote work soft skills, both in the skills section on a resume and in the cover letter. In addition to writing an engaging cover letter and resume tailored to the position which will showcase the research and commitment use effective bullet points and cite examples of when skills were used in previous jobs. In the interview, talk a lot about the attributes that would make a strong remote worker.

4. Make a Strong Impression After submitting an application, job seekers should always follow up with the hiring manager, stressing the interest in the job and what makes them a strong contender for the position. Plus, this is another great opportunity to highlight some of the skills that make them an excellent candidate. Remember: these minor details can have a significant impact, impress a potential employer, and give a candidate a competitive edge.
